RADIO Cavell 1350AM Gold Award Winners AT NATIONAL Hospital Radio Awards 2006

Radio Cavell 1350AM, Oldham’s hospital radio service, has again won ‘Gold’ in the National Hospital Radio Awards. “A bit like the ‘Oscars’ for radio stations,” was how Phil Edmonds, Broadcast Manager and the man who compiled and edited Cavell’s entry described the glitzy award ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool. “We have always believed that just because people are in hospital it doesn’t mean they lose interest in the outside world. The NHS has always been a ‘political’ topic; perhaps being in hospital makes patients more interested?”

Cavell’s gold winning entry was in “The Best Special Event Broadcast” category and featured their “General Election Results Programme” from 2005, broadcast live from the Studios at The Royal Oldham Hospital and the count at The Queen Elizabeth Hall.

One of the presenters of the programme, David McGealy, said he was “thrilled” that the programme was so highly regarded “most people tend to think that politics is a bit boring, but nothing could be further from the truth. The excitement and tension on the night at the ‘count’ has to be experienced to be believed, and of course the result of any election, especially a General Election, has serious consequences for all people.”

The programme featured the excitement of that night in May 2005 from after the polls closed, the return of the ballot boxes to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the count, with comments from candidates and officers involved in the election process, the declaration of local results and ‘victory’ speeches from Phil Woolas and Michael Meacher. All this while keeping patients informed of the national situation and ‘key’ results.

Last year’s Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Abdul Jabbar, who was returning officer for one of the constituencies, expressed his delight in being able to close his year as Mayor with the honour of being ‘Returning Officer’ for such an important event.

The judges of the National Hospital Radio Awards were full of praise for Radio Cavell’s entry praising it for its “quality and content”.
