At a glitzy Oscar style ceremony held at the Europa Hotel in Belfast last Saturday Radio Cavell's 'Latics Live' was declared to be 'The Best Sports Programme' in the National Hospital Radio Awards.

The winning programme featured Radio Cavell’s coverage of Latics 1-0 victory in the Third Round of the FA Cup over Manchester City. The judges' commendation stated, ''It was a passionate, excellent production from all the presenters. There was good use of all facilities available to them. A very, very good sports programme, which will be appreciated by the hospital listeners.''

The Awards Ceremony was hoasted by Paul Robinson, former Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Television International and the 'Best Sports Programme' category was introduced by John Inverdale of BBC 5 Live and Grandstand. Jonathan Morrell of the ITV News Channel presented the Gold Award to David McGealy, Nigel Hobson and Phil Edmonds of Radio Cavell.

Radio Cavell’s David McGealy said, ''We were tremendously nervous as we awaited the result. I knew 'Latics Live' was a consistently good sports programme, but there were some other very good sports programmes in contention. When Radio Cavell’s name was announced it was like winning the FA Cup itself. All the team the presenters, reporters, commentators, programme assistants and producers who have worked long and hard all season on the programme can be proud of what they have achieved. We often get complementary comments about our sports programmes and listeners are often surprised when they discover none of the team are professional broadcasters. Our close working relationship with the manager, players and staff of Oldham Athletic has certainly helped 'Latics Live' achieve national recognition.''

'Latics Live' is broadcast to the patients, staff and visitors to the Royal Oldham Hospital on Patientline and 1350AM, and around the world on the World Wide Web as part of Oldham Athletic’s 'Latics World'.

The National Hospital Radio Awards are the equivalent of the Sony Awards and is a showcase for hospital broadcasting. The whole Awards Ceremony was broadcast by satellite to many hospitals around the UK.
