Latics Live Statement
Statement from Radio Cavell 1350AM
Radio Cavell regret to announce that it was unable to broadcast the 'Latics
Live' programme this Saturday 13th December 2003.
Since the end of January we have been without a sponsor for the programme
and Radio Cavell has been absorbing the costs. However we can't afford to
continue doing this. Thus it is with great regret that we will be unable to
bring you the 'Latics Live' programme for some of the long distance away games.
Background:
It takes 29 man hours to produce a 'Latics Live' programme for a home game.
It takes between 31 and 47 man hours to produce an away game programme.
In January 2002 Oldham Athletic asked Radio Cavell if we would provide our
'Latics Live' programme for broadcast on the internet via the Oldham Athletic
website. To assist in this they would find a sponsor and Torex PLC became
that sponsor. The sponsorship deal ran from 1st February 2002 until the end
of January 2003. During this period Radio Cavell invested over £7,500 in state
of the art outside broadcast equipment. This ensured that a quality commentary
service could be provided.
In late October 2002 we asked the club about the renewal of the sponsorship
deal until the end of the 2002/3 season. By the end of January 2003 no commitment
had been made by any sponsor. By this time the club was reporting 'some difficulties!'
To show it's commitment to the club Radio Cavell decided to complete the season
at it's own expense.
During the season 2003/4 it has been somewhat difficult to say the least to
find a sponsor for the 'Latics Live' programme while there was uncertainty
regarding the club's future. Thus to date Radio Cavell and the individual
volunteers, from their own pockets, has financed the cost of the programme.
As a registered charity struggling for funds it is hard for Radio Cavell to
justify this additional expenditure. It even reached the point where the club
has been unable to provide us with the traditional 'pair of match day tickets'
as a prize in our Latics Live competition.
Thus it is with great sadness that the above decision was reached with regard
to the Colchester game. The commentary broadcast on the 'Latics World' website
of this game had nothing to do with Radio Cavell.
Now that that the clubs future looks secure we would hope that we'll be in
a position to find sponsorship for the 'Latics Live' programme and 'normal
service' can be resumed as soon as possible.
